The Care Package Is Back
Long before online shopping, overnight shipping, and one-click gifting, the New Orleans School of Cooking was already sending a little piece of New Orleans across the country.
In the 1980s and 1990s, our founder, Joe Cahn, kept a mailing list of former students, visitors, and Louisiana-food lovers. Four times a year, a New Orleans School of Cooking catalog would arrive in their mailbox, filled with cookbooks, seasonings, pantry staples, and gifts from the School. And from those catalogs, we shipped care packages.
It was a way of sending someone more than a present. It sent a taste of New Orleans to people who had visited and missed it, to friends who needed cheering up, and to family members who were probably overdue for a good pot of gumbo.
Over the years, the catalogs disappeared and the way people shop changed. But we’ve always loved the idea behind those original care packages.
So we decided to bring them back.
An Old Idea, With a New Look
Our new care packages are a fresh take on something that has been part of the School almost from the beginning. We’ve updated the packaging, carefully chosen what goes inside, and made them easy to send directly to someone you’re thinking about.
There are plenty of occasions when a bottle of wine, a gift card, or flowers will do the job. Sometimes, though, you want to send something that feels a little more personal.
A New Orleans School of Cooking care package says, “I thought of you.” And when you came to mind, so did lively tables, easy laughter, and time well spent together. The same can be said of New Orleans. Here, meals last a little longer, stories get a little better with every telling, and there’s always room for one more at the table.
That’s the feeling we wanted to put into these boxes.

Because after more than 45 years of teaching people how to cook Louisiana food, we’ve learned that the recipe is rarely the whole story. The best part is who you share it with.
A Little New Orleans, Sent With Love
Joe probably wouldn’t recognize much about the way we sell a care package today. There’s no order form to tear out of a quarterly catalog, no check to mail back, and no waiting to see what shows up in the next issue. But he would know something good when he saw it.
Some things are worth bringing back.
